Gray Loft Gallery ~ An evening of poetry and music this Saturday

You are cordially invited to join us for an intimate performance in the gallery this Saturday:

Cloud Cantata/Scales for the Living

Saturday, October 22, 7:30 pm

Carla Harryman reading and performing live and in-person
with
Jon Raskin in the gallery.

Poet Carla Harryman and multi-instrumentalist Jon Raskin musician render Harryman’s Cloud Cantata and in-progress “Scales for the Living” in variations of speaking, singing, and musical interpretations. These dialogue poems respond to domestic companionship and televised bubble, dreamscapes and slant trouble, war, immigration catastrophe (de) realization, troubled waters, historical circumspection, and whatever occurs in the liminal mind or neighborhood of pandemic time.
Jon and Carla have been doing poetry and music collaborations for twenty years.

Seating is limited - please let us know if you will join us – please RSVP

ART  ABOUT  TOWN!
Please check out the first edition of Art About Town, a new blog published by the Oakland Art Murmur written by Mills College professor, historian and author Mario Hernandez.  We are thrilled to be featured in the inaugural story about the art and artists of Oakland.  In this thoughtfully crafted article you will learn about the history of Jingletown and the artists who created the first live/work studio building in the neighborhood - who are featured in our current exhibition.

Thank you Mario and Oakland Art Murmur!

History, Inspiration and Community...

Our exhibit  Jingletown Originals  is on view for only two more weeks.
Gallery hours are extended this weekend to include Saturday and Sunday, from 1:00- 3:00 pm.  Join us then or for our closing reception on Saturday, October 29, 3:00 - 6:00pm.

This is an exhibit not to be missed and we would love to see you in the gallery!

This group show features artists who have lived and created art in the first live/work building in Jingletown, honoring this rich artistic history that spans almost 4 decades.

This exhibit commemorates the fourth decade since the inception of the first live-work building for artists in Oakland’s Jingletown Community.  The artists featured in the show - either current or former residents - of this original building helped pave the way for this distinctive, flourishing arts community. In addition to carving physical spaces in which to work, artist communities forge relationships that encourage the commitment needed to make art. The artists showcased in Jingletown Originals bring to the exhibition four decades of this type of shared support, while maintaining a diversity of style, medium and philosophy.

The experiences of living in this artist work/live building provided support and encouragement from informal critiques and discussions. Jingletown Originals celebrates the enduring friendships and honors the intellectual sense of place and creativity that were forged in our building – which is now the home of Gray Loft Gallery.  The exhibit also speaks to the significant role that living in this celebrated Jingletown community has had on these artists living and working in the Bay Area.

In their own words:

ABOUT  GRAY  LOFT  GALLERY

Gray Loft Gallery has promoted the rich art culture of Jingletown and the greater Bay Area for 10 years. The gallery has been referred to as a hidden gem in Jingletown, and noted by the late Kenneth Baker, former SF Chronicle Art Critic, in his Visual Arts Don’t Miss Column as “…A space gaining prominence in the Bay Area…”   The mission of the gallery is to provide exhibition opportunities for artists in a setting that is an alternative to the traditional gallery model. We hope to inspire, engage and celebrate artists in our community and beyond.  We acknowledge the achievements of emerging, mid-career and established artists – with an emphasis on those who live and work in the Bay Area – in a non-traditional art space. A number of artists began their art career at Gray Loft Gallery.

“I have always enjoyed this gallery, superb atmosphere and lighting. The polished and worn hardwood floors creek slightly in places as you climb to the third floor, providing a granular and unique, organic aesthetic. This is a do-not-miss venue in the East Bay.”  –  Facebook Review

Gray Loft Gallery has received "Best Art Gallery" in the Oakland Magazine's Readers Choice Award in 2016, 2017, 2021 and voted one of five top art galleries in 2022.
