A Review, Wine Tasting and The Art of Clouds

We are very pleased to share this glowing review in Midbrow Oakland written by Vita Hewitt:  Clouds Take Center Stage in Dreamlike Exhibit  "What we see in the sky and what we imagine it to be: beautiful and just beyond reach, even as climate change alters color and composition."

We hope you will join us this Saturday for a special wine tasting from our favorite winery!  Enjoy samples of a few different varieties from this boutique winery and take in the exquisite work in the show!

Tessier Wine Tasting: Saturday, August 2, 3:00 – 5:00 pm

Quoting Vita Hewitt "Atmospheric and ephemeral, with a whisper of the mythical, clouds take flight in the imaginings of over 25 artists in Gray Loft Gallery’s summer show The Art of Clouds. Painted, drawn, photographed, rendered by air pollutants on mirrored surfaces, and captured in minute detail, renderings of clouds surround the viewer in this jewel-box of a show."

Please stop by the gallery to experience this stunning collection that explores the ever-changing essence of clouds in art, imagination, and nature.

These participating artists offer a unique perspective on the sky above the Bay Area and beyond:
Gale Antokal, Francis Baker, Paola Berthoin, Ginnie Chabre, Mark Citret, Laura Graham, Sarah Grew, Ake Grunditz, Irene Imfeld, Patrick Jagger, Jennifer LaPierre, Laurel Anderson Malinovsky, Melina Meza, Julia Nelson-Gal, Deborah O'Grady, Ginny Parsons, Maja Planinac, Fernando Reyes, Alex Starfield, Styrous, Christine Watten, Jan Watten, Sharon Wickham, Thomas Winz, Wilton Wong, June Yokell

UPCOMING  EXHIBIT!

ALIGNED

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 20, 5:00 - 7:30pm
Closing Reception:  Saturday, November 1, 5:00 - 7:30pm

We are pleased to present Aligned, a group exhibition showcasing the work of six women artists, woven together in a vivid tapestry of expression. Each artist, with her unique voice and vision, contributes to a collective narrative that resonates with universal themes of connection and creativity.

From the vibrant abstractions of Valerie Corvin to the surreal digital landscapes of Lisa Levine, Aligned maps a spectrum of style and sensibility. Kim Cardoso’s luminous encaustics converse with minimalism, while Anne Rabe’s photographs open a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Dee Tivenan’s emotive paintings echo the experiential textures found in Dobee Snowber’s mixed media works, bridging the gap between the abstract and the figurative.

Aligned is a testament to the power of artistic community and the invisible threads that bind us. It invites viewers to discover harmony within contrast and to explore the diverse ways art can narrate stories, evoke emotion, and capture moments of shared humanity.

ABOUT  GRAY  LOFT  GALLERY
Gray Loft Gallery has promoted the rich art culture of Jingletown and the greater Bay Area for 12 years. The gallery has been referred to as a hidden gem in Jingletown, and noted by the late Kenneth Baker, former SF Chronicle Art Critic, in his Visual Arts Don’t Miss Column as “…A space gaining prominence in the Bay Area…”   The mission of the gallery is to provide exhibition opportunities for artists in a setting that is an alternative to the traditional gallery model. We hope to inspire, engage and celebrate artists in our community and beyond.  We acknowledge the achievements of emerging, mid-career and established artists – with an emphasis on those who live and work in the Bay Area – in a non-traditional art space.  We are proud that many artists began their art career at Gray Loft Gallery.

“I have always enjoyed this gallery, superb atmosphere and lighting. The polished and worn hardwood floors creek slightly in places as you climb to the third floor, providing a granular and unique, organic aesthetic. This is a do-not-miss venue in the East Bay.”  –  Facebook Review

Gray Loft Gallery has received "Best Art Gallery" in the Oakland Magazine's Readers Choice Award in 2016, 2017, 2021 and voted one of five top art galleries in 2022 and 2023.

Details about our designers:
Carol Lee Shanks designs and handcrafts unique and wearable clothing. She has a great reverence for cloth, allowing it to be the foundation of her inspiration. Carol strives to make beautiful, simple, unstructured garments that feel good on the body, function well and are easy to care for. Her layered silhouettes of unencumbered cloth flatter the body and capture the eye with a hint of mysterious delight.  The surfaces of these garments are lively due to the piecing and patching that happens while she assembles the small bits into a larger piece of cloth.  Ultimately, she creates layered silhouettes of unstructured garment shapes that become moving sculptures once they are on the body.

Devin Crane is a 17-year-old high school senior in Alameda, California. At age 12, she taught herself how to sew during the COVID-19 pandemic.  She began to sketch clothing designs and used the old family sewing machine, scrap fabric and reused a LOT of ribbon. This resourcefulness instilled a deep appreciation for sustainability and innovation within fashion. She organized her first fashion show at a local art studio, which encouraged her to design and created a second show with eleven unique outfits – including a prom dress for a friend. She believes by using natural resources and having family support has inspired her to continue to create unique fashions.

Show Review!  Please read this excellent review in the Independent Review Crew by Vita Hewiit here.

New College Circle is a celebration of fifty years of creative achievement launched by an experimental education at New College of California (NCOC) in San Francisco.  On view in the exhibit will be archival materials, costume design, film, drawing, landscape design, music, installation, sculpture, performance, and photography.

Featured Artists: Carola Anderson, David B. Doty, Michael Patrick Lynch, Elaine McKeen, Henry S. Rosenthal, Dale Soules, Meredith Tromble

Catalyzed by Meredith Tromble

In the mid-1970s, a group of young artists at New College of California fueled their creative practices with friendship and the radically experimental education offered by the school. They drew each other, recorded their own physiological data, performed plays written by their professor, invented musical instruments, and received credit for a gallimaufry of life experiences. At the time, statistics revealed that of students graduating with an art degree, only 5% were still making art ten years later. But in the ensuing decades each person in the New College Circle created their own path over, under, or around the barriers that stop young artists from becoming mature artists, pursuing creative practices and careers. This exhibition presents the New College Circle’s vibrant work in context with the unique institution that prepared them to thrive creatively throughout life.
