In conjunction with Rhythmix’s Second Annual Wine, Women & Song Festival on Aug. 22, the K Gallery presents Through Her Eyes,
a group exhibition featuring eight East Bay artists working in a range
of media to illuminate the varied lenses through which women see the
world. From casseroles to mythic archetypes, from bowling balls to
dreamscapes, the artists in the show draw inspiration from the mundane
to the divine to explore physical, social, political, and emotional
dimensions of identity.
The
exhibition examines how daily routines and realities influence
imagination and creativity; how, by embracing things that have become
ordinary, we can reignite mystery and delight; and how, upon close
examination, we can excavate layers of the past to reveal truths about
the present. Through paintings, ceramics, sculpture, and photography,
the artists in Through Her Eyes acknowledge, question, celebrate, and subvert the roles women are often expected to perform.
Exhibiting artists include Carol Aust, Charlie Milgrim, Deborah O’Grady, Ginny Parsons, KC Rosenberg, Susan Scott, Deborah Sullivan, and Jan Watten. Curated by Rhythmix Artistic Director and Founder Janet Koike.
An
opening reception for the exhibition will take place as part of 2nd
Friday on July 10 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Artwork will also be on view during
Rhythmix’s Wine, Women & Song event on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 4 pm
to 10 pm. Ticket packages range from $35 to $110, and include options
for reserve wine and food tastings by some of the region’s top artisans,
a panel discussion of women wine producers, and electrifying world
music and R&B performances by an all-star lineup. Proceeds support
Rhythmix’s youth arts education programs in Alameda and Oakland. Details

Botanica: All Things Plant Life
From
16th Century Flemish painters, to Cézanne and the Post Impressionists,
the color and variety found in plant life, as well as the potent
symbolism, has made it a popular subject for still-lifes and artist
studies. Botanica asks artists to draw on these themes to
create artwork that explores how plant life can be represented in a
diverse reach of media.
Botanica is a National Juried Exhibition and was juried by Ken Harman of Hashimoto Contemporary and Spoke Art, San Francisco, CA and MacKenzie Stevens of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA. Please join me and a number of other artists participating in this wonderful show about all things plant life! For more information about my work, please see my website.
